Continue turning until the outer shape of the bowl is complete. If you aren’t looking to make bowls that are larger than 10” in diameter, a smaller benchtop lathe will do. With the lathe rotating slowly, place the bowl gouge on the tool rest and let it cut lightly into the bowl blank. Move the bowl gouge slightly along the tool rest and remember to shape the bowl base as may be necessary.
Adjust the tool rest as may be necessary while focusing on the uniformity in the exterior.
In-depth video class for those interested in turning their first wood bowl on a lathe. Taken from the perspective of a new wood turner or someone interested.
The only two things I would do differently are: 1) Make the bed 18" long. Build the main post out of 4" or maybe 6" square tube or box beam. Buy bowl turning lathe and get the best deals at the lowest prices on eBay!
Acclaimed woodturner Richard Raffan demonstrates how he turns a simple cherry bowl, step-by-step. Well, you’ve done it.
You’ve stuck your head down the wood bowl turning rabbit hole. This entire website is dedicated to your journey of exploring wood bowl turning, not only as a beginner but later when you’re ready for more advanced concepts of wood bowl making. Unless on purpose, do not let the gouge cut too deep into the bowl blank. Here are some basic specifications.
The outside of our bowl will be turned by direct attachment to a faceplate. We will then turn the bowl around and glue the freshly turned foot on a glue block: a 1-1⁄4″-thick disk of durable wood that is of slightly larger diameter than the faceplate.
The thickness assumes that 1″ screws are holding the block to the faceplate. Different lathes offer different features.
For turning large bowls look for a heavy machine with variable spee a robust tool rest, and reverse capabilities. For really large work it’s also great if the headstock can slide into a position that allows you to turn a bowl outboard. Record CL- with Stan this is a medium turning hook, designed for greenwood bowl and platter turning and made in the uk (by me).
A LOVELY bowl turning lathe USED BUT STIILL IN good CONDITION, COME FROM AN NON SMOKING HOME in Bognor Regis, THANK YOU FOR LOOKING, HAPPY BIDDING. Some woods are more toxic than others and may require that you wear a dust mask while bowl turning.
Lathe work consists of three steps: roughing, shaping, and sanding. Each step requires a different speed.
The first step, roughing, is done to change the bowl blank from slightly eccentric to perfectly round. A single HSS traditional bowl gouge can turn an entire bowl, inside and out. Traditional HSS turning tools, like the bowl gouge, incorporate angles to more efficiently and cleanly cut wood fibers. The entire bowl gouge is presented at an angle to the bowl blank.
And the physics of the bowl gouge tip present the bowl gouge bevel at yet another angle. Using the bowl gauge, cut down the tenon as much as possible while still being careful to not loosen it from the lathe. Once the tenon is a manageable size, remove the bowl from the lathe and hammer off the rest of the tenon with a hammer and chisel.
Finish the bottom of the bowl with a little bit of sanding and Danish oil. You can also use a burl, which is a rounded tree growth, if you know where to get one.
Due to their already round shape, burls work well for bowl turning. However, if you’re a beginner, it’s best to start with a bowl blank of a soft woo like soft maple or pine. Turn the lathe back on.
Preparing for the Lathe. Use an axe to get the wood to a basic bowls shape. Making a green wood bowl blank is essentially the process of preparing a particular piece of fresh cut woo to a given size and shape. Creating a green wood bowl blank involves removing as much of the surrounding excess wood as possible in preparation for the blank to later be easily turned on the lathe.
The lathe is stopped regularly, so that the bowl can be pushed against the rebate. This means that the completed lid will eventually fit the bowl perfectly.
A piece of soft pine is turned with an inset. The face plate on this bowl is attached to the top of the bowl. We will turn a tenon on the bottom to use in our turning chuck when we will hollow out the bowl.
Mount the blank onto the lathe using the face plate. Rotate the wood by hand to ensure that you are not hitting your rails or your turning rest.
Lathe (I have a jet mini lathe, but obviously the bigger the lathe the bigger the bowl ) Wood. Wood turning bowl blanks gift selection box blanks Mixed sizes and species 40.
